Shorts
When it comes to men’s shorts, the decision comes down to three factors: the type of garment, the length, and the material. A surf boardshort doesn’t perform the same as a casual short or a multi-pocket cargo; each one is designed for a specific use. Below, I explain how to choose the one that truly matches each person’s style and needs.
Men’s shorts: the types that matter
At Mundo-Surf we distinguish three clear archetypes. First, the hybrid short: the most versatile option. It combines quick-dry fabric on the front with breathable mesh panels on the sides, allowing wide range of movement in the water and an easy transition to the beach. Second, the walkshort: longer, almost down to the knee, designed for that use that sits between casual beachwear and light sessions. Third, the cargo or short with side pockets: convenient if you need to carry things, though it adds weight and complexity.
Surf boardshorts are specialized shorts: snug waist design, reinforced seams and material that withstands neoprene and salt chafing. It’s best to prioritize them when in doubt between any random short and a garment designed for a serious session.
Choosing the length and type of boardshort according to context
The measurement that really matters is not the name, but where the short ends. A short that finishes two fingers above the knee quickly restricts movement in the water; below the knee you gain comfort when paddling but lose mobility in turns. The middle point —right at the knee— is always my starting reference. For casual summer wear, you can go a bit shorter than that. For men’s shorts that combine surfing and strolling, that knee reference is hard to beat.
The waistband should be secure but not tight: an elastic or internal drawcord avoids surprises in the water. Quality men’s shorts feature an adjustable waist because every body type is different.
Quick-dry fabrics for real comfort
What truly makes the difference here is the material. A quality polyester fabric dries in thirty minutes; pure cotton stays wet for hours. In a Mediterranean climate, our stance at Mundo-Surf is to always prioritize shorts with quick-dry properties. Hybrid shorts combine this technology with stretch: the standard 92% polyester and 8% elastane performs well in cold water, keeps its shape after washing and allows flexion without tightness.
Men’s shorts with 4-way stretch fabric —which expands in all directions— are more expensive, but if you’re in the water three or more sessions a week, that investment pays off in freedom of movement and durability.
Use cases: surf vs. casual wear
A casual-style short can work in a pinch, but it isn’t the optimal choice. Men’s shorts designed for surf sessions —reinforced crotch, double-stitched seams, generous fit to wear over neoprene— last longer and perform better. For surfers who combine a morning session with a coffee afterwards, a hybrid short is irreplaceable: it goes into the water easily, comes out and dries while you share wave analysis with your mates.
At Mundo-Surf we have real stock of more than a thousand items, with 100-day returns. If you’re unsure between two models, our team can guide your choice according to weekly session count, usual wave type and each surfer’s build.
