5mm padded surfboards covers

For surfboard bags, thickness and material are what matter

For surfboard bags, 5 mm polyethylene thickness is the protection standard: it determines whether your board can withstand daily transport without getting damaged. I always start from this thickness because it offers the best balance between durability and manageability. Two layers of a sun-reflective fabric add thermal insulation and protection against direct UV rays.

What really makes the difference here is that 5 mm polyethylene is thick enough to absorb impacts during transport by car, on foot or by bike, but not so heavy that it becomes hard to handle. It protects the board from direct sunlight, from heat build-up in the vehicle and from scuffs from daily use. The reflective layer significantly reduces heat accumulation inside the bag, a detail that matters when you leave the board in the car for hours.

Types of bags according to your surfboard’s shape

The first question I ask myself when looking at a bag is whether it fits the specific shape of the board. Standard 5 mm surfboard bags are available in multiple sizes and variants for each type:

  • Shortboard: short, angular boards. The bag must be proportionally narrower. In transport, this means there is no extra space that would allow movement inside.
  • Mid-length: mid-size boards. They require a proportional fit, neither too tight nor excessively loose.
  • Fish: boards that are wider in relation to their length. The bag must accommodate that width without compressing the board.
  • Longboard: long boards. They need a more generous length in the bag; it is advisable to opt for an 8- or 9-foot model.

Each variant exists because fit matters: a bag that is too loose allows the board to move during transport, and one that is too tight creates friction that damages the laminate. At Mundo-Surf our approach is to look first at the board type and then at the exact size.

How to choose the right size for your board

I always recommend choosing a bag that is slightly longer than the board: specifically, about 15–20 cm more. The reason is that this way the surf fins can stay on. If the board measures exactly 6 feet, the bag should be 6.5 or 7 feet.

This margin avoids having to remove the fins every time you put the board away, which saves time and reduces the risk of losing them. In addition, that extra space acts as cushioning during transport: the board does not hit the end of the bag.

Protection for transport and storage

5 mm bags protect in multiple contexts. They are suitable for daily transport by car, on foot or by bike. They also cover short- and medium-term storage, and are practical for leaving the board in the vehicle between sessions. For longer journeys or extreme storage conditions, it is advisable to consider reinforced variants.

The price of a standard 5 mm bag is affordable and offers real protection without excessive investment. If your board is expensive or you expect long-term storage in garages without temperature control, it is worth considering a thicker option. For most surfers with regular use, 5 mm covers all common needs.
