Short suits 2mm and less
A women's shorty wetsuit is not a simple swimsuit: the difference between a 2 mm neoprene and a 1.5 mm one is what separates comfort in 20 °C waters from the cold in long loops. If you surf regularly in spring, summer or in warm waters, a shorty is your ally; it covers shoulders and short legs, leaving arms and thighs free for maximum mobility. Unlike a spring suit or a long sleeve suit, the shorty allows you almost total freedom of movement without sacrificing essential thermal protection.
When to use a women's shorty suit?
Short wetsuits for women are ideal when the water temperature ranges between 19 and 24 °C, that perfect spring and summer window. If the temperature drops below 19 °C, you will need a spring suit or a long sleeve suit. If it rises above 24 °C, a 1.5 mm shorty or even a lycra will suffice. The shorty neoprene women's suit is the balanced solution: enough thermal protection for long sessions, enough mobility for technical turns and quick passes.
Types of short surf suits for women
Within the shorty neoprene family, you will find three main variants:
- Classic Shorty: sleeveless, covers up to mid-thigh. Maximum arm freedom, ideal for women who prioritize movement.
- Shorty with short sleeve: protects shoulders and upper arms. Better sun and thermal protection without sacrificing agility in hips and legs.
- Spring suit or half neoprene suit: covers full arms but short legs. For transitions between seasons or slightly colder waters.
Neoprene thicknesses: choose according to water temperature
The thickness determines the thermal insulation capacity. For women's surf in warm waters, these are the standard ranges:
- 1.5 mm: waters of 22-26 °C. Maximum flexibility, light protection against abrasions and UV rays.
- 2 mm: waters of 20-22 °C. The classic balance between thermal protection and mobility, the most versatile option.
- 3 mm: waters of 17-19 °C. Greater insulation, but with a bit more rigidity; better for long winter sessions in temperate weather.
Zipper vs. without zipper: what changes
Women's shorty wetsuits also differ in the closure system:
- Back zip shorty neoprene: zipper on the back. Easier to put on and take off, better sealing. Standard in most brands.
- Without zipper (chest zip or without zip): more flexibility in the chest and back, fewer infiltration points. Preferred by surfers looking for maximum freedom of movement.
