Longboard Leashes
With a surf leash for longboards, the cord length and diameter determine strength and comfort: longer boards require longer, thicker leashes to handle the rider’s weight and movement.
The first question I ask myself is where the attachment point goes. The ankle leash fastens around the ankle and is more common on shortboards; on longboards, the pressure in that area increases due to the board’s weight. The knee leash is fastened above the joint and distributes tension better on long boards, allowing greater freedom of movement when paddling and walking the board.
The cord diameter on longboard leashes ranges from 7 mm to 10 mm. A 7 mm leash is standard for boards up to 2 meters; beyond that, 8 or 9 mm becomes essential. In the water, this translates into better shock absorption and greater break resistance, especially relevant in big waves or strong current conditions.
What really makes the difference here is the quality of the internal material. Leash strength also depends on the neoprene in the cuff and the attachment points. At Mundo-Surf, our stance is to favor leashes with high‑tension nylon cords and reinforced anchors: this ensures the cord holds up without losing flexibility, even after hundreds of sessions.
To choose the right length, measure your board: if it’s around 2 meters, a 10‑foot leash (approximately 3 meters) is the standard; from 2.5 meters onward, the length should increase to 12 feet. A board without a suitable leash carries a risk of losing it and causes unnecessary fatigue in your leg.
In practice, in small or medium waves a 7 mm leash with ankle attachment is perfectly manageable. In big waves or for heavier surfers, the knee leash with an 8 or 9 mm diameter reduces impact and accumulated fatigue. If you’re hesitating between these two options, it’s better to prioritize a knee attachment when wipeout frequency is high or local conditions are demanding.
