The SWORD-FISH is exactly what its name suggests: a pelagic fish that is furiously fast and aggressive, with a wide, powerful tail and a long, pointed nose. It was designed at the request (and under the direction) of Kolohe Andino, as an extension of his favorite RNF-Retro. Kolohe surfed his little neon RNF-Retro better than I had ever seen anyone surf any fish in small Trestles waves. Inspired but not satisfied, he came to me wanting to create something even better. With the challenge laid down, we got to work to do exactly that. Starting from Kolohe’s magical little 5'6" RNF-Retro, we added 3" in length, extending the nose, pulling it in, and adding a bit of gradual nose rocker. We also narrowed the whole board slightly and pulled in the tail a bit, keeping the double “pelagic” side-cut outline. We kept the tail rocker and the same bottom curves but refined the rails a bit more.
The end result is a little 5'9" 19.25" 2.38" sprinter, reminiscent of a classic Clyde Beatty “Rocket-Fish”. We documented Kolohe’s first surf on our first attempt, and we knew we were onto something. “I love it. It might be the best alternative board I’ve ever ridden. Let’s make it a model!”. So we did… Kolohe Andino’s Sword-Fish: a fast, aggressive and powerful “predator fish”, with a longer, pointier nose, “pelagic” side-cut outline, wide fish tail and ridiculously fast rocker.
“Fast, precise, playful and just fun, the SwordFish is a quick-paddling, easy-handling, iconic everyday board, a speed-burner for pocket turns, no need for good waves, a go-to, bullet of a board for everyone.”
