The Firewire Spun Honey is the modern evolution of Dan Mann’s iconic Spitfire, a high-performance groveler designed for surfers seeking maximum fun and maneuverability in small, weak waves, without sacrificing advanced performance when conditions improve.
Developed together with freesurfer Kevin Schulz, the Spun Honey combines speed, ease of use, and a wide sweet spot with a more aggressive and reactive character than other groveler models in the Firewire range.
Wave type:
The Spun Honey is primarily designed for small, mushy, low-power waves, where it easily generates speed while maintaining excellent maneuverability. However, its refined design allows you to surf it confidently in more demanding conditions, even performing well in hollow waves up to overhead size.
It is an ideal board for those looking for a one-board quiver to get the most out of the most common surf conditions.
Design features:
Based on the popular Spitfire, the Spun Honey incorporates a series of upgrades focused on modern surfing:
- Compact outline, slightly narrower than the Sweet Potato.
- Forward wide point to enhance paddling and speed generation.
- Bullet-style nose to improve transition in quick maneuvers.
- Diamond tail, providing more hold, pivot, and controlled release through turns.
- Thin, sensitive rails that deliver the feel of a high-performance shortboard.
- Step Rail technology inherited from the Spitfire and the Mashup, allowing volume to be hidden in the center of the board while maintaining thin, reactive rails.
- Generous foam distribution under the chest to make paddling and wave entry easier.
On the bottom it features a pronounced single concave with an integrated double concave that extends further forward than on most conventional designs. This bottom generates speed, lift, and quick rail-to-rail transitions.
Construction:
Available in Firewire’s exclusive Helium technology:
Helium Core Technology:
Stringerless EPS core with flex control through parabolic rails made from Paulownia and Balsa wood. This construction delivers an extremely light, responsive, and fast board, ideal for generating speed in everyday surf conditions.
Fin setup:
It is recommended to use it with the Firewire Spun Honey Fin Set, developed specifically for this model. Their low-rake template enhances speed, control, and smooth flow through turns.
Summary:
Within the Dan Mann range, the Firewire Spun Honey sits between the Sweet Potato and the Dominator 2.0. More radical and precise than a Sweet Potato, yet more accessible and fun than a pure high-performance shortboard, it is a board designed to make the most of everyday small to medium waves.
