Resin modifiers and fillers

We use various additives for the manufacturing of surfboards: PMEC catalyst to harden the resin, paraffinized styrene for sanding the polyester resin, styrene monomer to make the resin more fluid, and glass microbeads to provide more consistency to the resin. We offer several container sizes so you can find the one that best suits your needs.

Frequently Asked Questions about Resin Additives

To ensure that polyester resin cures properly, add between 1% and 3% of PMEK catalyst. The exact amount depends on the ambient temperature:

  • With high temperatures, use less catalyst.
  • With low temperatures, you may need to slightly increase the amount.

Important: never exceed 3% catalyst, as too much can cause yellow stains and negatively affect the resin finish.

For optimal results, it is recommended to work with the resin between 16 °C and 25 °C.

Add approximately 5% of paraffinated styrene to the polyester resin and mix thoroughly until homogeneous.

Important:

  • Paraffinated styrene should only be added in the final resin layer as a finishing coat.
  • Never use it to impregnate fiberglass, as it is not structural.

This additive allows the resin to cure correctly on the surface, forming a film that prevents air contact. The resin can then be sanded easily without clogging the sandpaper, giving a clean and smooth finish.

No, it is not defective. This behavior is normal in winter or at low temperatures.

When the temperature drops below 14 °C, the paraffinated styrene may appear thick, semi-solid, or with flakes and small particles. This effect becomes more noticeable as temperatures decrease.

Although it may seem hard, the paraffinated styrene is still fully usable. Simply shake the container well to return it to a liquid and homogeneous state.
